California Natural Hoof Care

The AANHCP natural trim is highly technical and differs in most respects from conventional farrier and 'generic barefoot trims.' The natural trim is NOT invasive (i.e. bleeds, excessively thins, or renders the hoof hypersensitive).  As an AANHCP practitioner, I honor the Healing Powers of Nature and advocate no pernicious act or procedure, including any manner of fixed shoeing or orthopedic treatment which impairs the hoof mechanism, obstructs the natural gaits, or causes psychological trauma, upon any equine if asked, nor suggest any such counsel.

I am no longer accepting new clients, please feel free to email me with questions!

Laminitis and Founder

"Laminitis and Founder are actually the same disease. Laminitis is an inflammation  of the dermal tissues that connect the hoof to the horse. Laminitis goes by other colloquial names, such as "seedy toe," "stretched white line disease," "white line disease (WLD)," and "founder." Laminitis is epidemic around the world, and nothing to take lightly, however, prevention is simple, inexpensive, and requires little or no veterinary intervention! By faithfully following NHC recommendations your horse will essentially be "founder proof."(J.Jackson  AANHCP Field Guide)

If you notice any signs of laminitis please contact me immediately!

Please feel free to ask me any questions about this horrific, yet preventible disease!!

To better understand Laminitis and Founder, I recommend reading Jaime Jackson's book Founder . (See Helpful Links and Books Page)

Jaime Jackson discusses Laminitis on his website.

Natural Diet

A core principle of NHC, that I cannot stress enough, is feeding one's horse as natural a diet as possible. Feed grass hays  such as Bermuda, Timothy, and Orchard Grass. Avoid Legumes (like ALFALFA and clover), as well as grain hays (e.g. oat, wheat, and barley). A horse's diet should be free of sweeteners, such as, molasses, cane or beet sugar, and high fructose corn syrup! For hard keepers, seniors, laminitis sufferers, and horses with other metabolic disorders, the AANHCP recommends:

ADM Stay Strong Metabolic Mineral Pellets (corn-alfalfa-molasses-free):1/2 lb. AM, 1/2 lb. PM

Quiessence (a magnesium based supplement that is a complimentary supplement with ADM pellets

Dehydrated 100% Premium Timothy Cubes/Pellets (low-NSC/low starch)

Oats - Whole or Crimped Only: Up to 1lb AM, 1lb PM

Paddock Paradise - Natural Horse Boarding

Picture

"With the rise of serious hoof problems across the domestic world due to unnatural lifestyles, more and more owners are seeking out - or creating for themselves - natural boarding environments for their horses. For horses living in traditional stall environments, natural boarding is the perfect solution for improving their mental and physical health, and overall performance" (Jamie Jackson AANHCP Field Guide to NHC)

"Based upon the wild horse model, Jackson's research supports the theory that horses will thrive physically, mentally and emotionally if kept in an environment that takes into consideration the most basic elements of their natural world -- most notably by situating and propelling the horse forward. Jackson found that because the hoof is adaptively cross-linked to the nexus of natural behavior and movement, it can be restored to its native integrity and soundness by putting horses in a simulated natural environment. This is especially noteworthy given the dismal results of a study published in the November 2000 edition of the American Farriers Journal , which stated that less than 10 percent of the 122 million equines around the world are clinically sound!

The concept of a "paddock paradise" encourages movement through the creation of a series of pathways or 'tracks,' with various stimuli, such as strategically placed feeding spots and watering holes, incorporated within or alongside the tracks in order to activate curiosity or movement. Other natural lifestyle and horsekeeping topics examined by Jackson in Paddock Paradise include Diet and Feeding recommendations; Water and Watering Behavior, Dung and Dominance; Rolling, Pawing and Bathing; Resting, Sleeping and Grooming Behaviors; Combat and Playtime, Prey & Predator Behaviors; and the concept of Relative Dominance."
